It just shows how insular the US is, despite TV, radio and the Internet. Most of them have probably only ever seen a map of the US.
I read somewhere that 80% of Americans have only a rudimentary literacy level, they can read and write enough to be classed as literate but that’s about it. I dismissed it as rubbish but now I believe it!
