And so the improbable but inspiring story of Slumdog Millionaire gets shot to pieces as the father of the little lad who acts in it (and is from a slum himself) gets beaten by his father as he returned home from the Oscars ceremony.
A bleak reminder of how bad things are for young kids and especially how bad things are in India, where a ruthless caste system exists that cements child abuse, abuse of women and of the poor into the society there.
My apologies about the source of course, but more on the slums of India and the caste system can be found here and here.

The woman thinks she has a following! Now who was it that said dont try to tell a stupid person they’re stupid?!
She is (in her own words) “a known person and there are people that like me. I’ve got a fan base and I’m scared of being rejected”. Is she barking mad?! She has no such thing! What she does have are millions of people who watch her to thank God that they are no-where near as pathetic as she is. A few others watch her to see the antics of a human being in the shape of a mentally retarded hippo.
Jade Goody: “I said, `I don’t know who she is, Shilpa whatever-her-name-is, Shilpa this, Shilpa that, Shilpa Poppadom’. But I didn’t say Shilpa Poppadom in a racial way”.
Anyway she is off, and if she has a clever publicist, she will rake in millions from exclusives on every channel she can get on. That’s capitalism for you!

Well; it is a tumultuous clash between an upper-middle class woman who speaks 8 languages, is well-educated, well-mannered (to the point of eccentricity), comes from a “good family” and a group of yobs who come from dysfunctional families and thrive in dank housing with beer cans as secondary carpets. It is almost unanimously agreed that Shilpa has set a most impressive example for others to follow – she has dealt with terrible bullying and ignorance with rather unexpected grace. Jade and Co have shown themselves to be throwaways to the Yob culture which afflicted Britain for so many years and apparently still has its stalwarts. Looking at the exchange between Jade and Shilpa, the sight of a barking, overweight and ignorant woman made for really sorry TV watching. Not for Shilpa – Shilpa obviously has much to return to. Not simply financially or career-wise; Shilpa is an educated and cultured woman who has a brain. Jade is an ignorant woman who will never be able to produce anything of worth. For me it is not racism (I am sure Jade will try to assure everyone of this as soon as she leaves) that is making Jade do this. Read the rest of this entry »

Blimey! article
I can see that the BB team are really happy that their flagging viewer numbers are on the rise – although one of their sponsors might pull out!

Now Blair has also waded into the argument saying that Britons should oppose racism in all of its forms. Asian MP Keith Vaz also tabled an Early Day Motion which sought to make Channel Four tell the BB households about certain limits etc.
This is all a very interesting debate which raises an issue of whether or not the BB household is truly representative of Britons or not. If, as in the household, many Britons are ignorant and racist, then this would be a problem. Whilst I was born and raised in London all my life, I think I am lucky in that London is a truly unique and culturally diverse city. From what I have seen during the past few years, not much of Britain is like London. That is worrying!

Well I never! In only a few days of watching TV, I was witnessing a mass evolution of what can and can’t be said on TV! A Newsnight debate yesterday hosted by Jeremy Paxman showed some unveiled racism from certain “intellectual” quarters towards Scottish people and a blatant opposition to Gordon Brown because he is Scottish. Not a debate about whether or not economically, militarily and feasibly; the union is right or wrong – but because he is Scottish. Forget the fact he has been chancellor for ages, his kids are going to be brought up as English (and Tony Blair was raised and educated in Scotland) but he is SCOTTISH.
BB clips today and stupid, ignorant and seemingly racist talk about Shilpa. All really beg the question why are people these days being forced to take sides on the basis of race? As children we never did and at university we certainly didn’t.

Over 2000 complaints from enraged Celebrity Big Brother viewers have flooded Ofcom. The complaints allege that racial offences are being committed against Shilpa Shetty, a prominent Bollywood actress. Already a number of BB particpants have been referring to Shilpa as “the Indian” and on another occassion her accent was made fun of. Ofcom is now looking into the matter. Shilpa Shetty’s mother is hoping that Shilpa will not be adversely affected by the terrible behaviour meted out to her.
This is one of the least watched BB’s and one that has recieved the most complaints.

Aishwarya Rai, Bollywood superstar, former Miss World and empty headed bimbo is now engaged to an equally unattractive bollywood star called Abhishek Bachchan who is the son of Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh is a real superstar in Bollywood and has acted in an absolutely absurd number of films – over 180. He strikes some silly poses alot of the time and they call him Big B. I saw a few Indian movies in my time, some weren’t too bad, they generally have nice, straight forward plots but are just characterised by totally depressing crying and sobbing women at the start and finish of the film, with about three thousand well choreographed dancers jumping around in impossible settings (ontop of moving trains, mountain peaks, rivers, university quads, parliaments etc). For some reason the soundtracks seem to be sung by the same woman. Or else all the bollywood female singers simply sound the same. I knew the daughter of a major bollywood producer at university and she was basially telling me how the whole industry is run by money-laundering criminals and an aristocratic mafia. Except her father of course who was clean. Or so she said.
